The Civic Holiday long weekend lands in Aurora, and the town has leaned into it: the Saturday market fills Town Park in the morning, a new Alley Jam concert series kicks off downtown at noon, and Monday is a bonus day off. A relaxed, unhurried start to August.
A warm long weekend with plenty of sun — highs near 28°C to start, easing back into the mid-20s by Sunday, with a chance of an afternoon thunderstorm Saturday.
The Saturday-afternoon Alley Jam series opens with guitarist and composer James Brown, joined by Clark Johnston and Ethan Ardelli. Free jazz, pop and rock in the laneway downtown — bring your own chair and arrive early, these fill up fast.
Kick off the long weekend with the Saturday market: produce, bakers, makers and live music in Town Park. Rain or shine, every Saturday through October. It's a short walk from Machell's Alley, so market first, Alley Jam after.
Monday, August 3 is the Civic Holiday. Town facilities and services run on a holiday schedule, so check hours before heading out to a pool or the library — and note the South Town Hall and Seniors' Centre parking lot is closed for construction.
The month-long family-friendly cycling challenge wraps up on the 31st — a final chance to tick off the cultural stops on the route before it closes for the year.

Candidates for mayor and the six ward-councillor seats must file in person on Nomination Day, August 21, between 9am and 2pm, with a filing fee of $200 for mayor and $100 for all other offices. Voting day is Monday, October 26.
The parking lot at South Town Hall and the Aurora Seniors' Centre is closed for construction. If you're heading to a program there over the long weekend, plan for alternate parking.

Markham-based Speech PAGE has opened a community-access program at Joy & Grow Therapy on Earl Stewart Drive, offering lower-cost speech and language support for children. It's aimed at families without Ontario Autism Program funding or extended health benefits, for whom private therapy is often out of reach.
The Town has confirmed candidates must file in person on August 21 between 9am and 2pm to run for mayor or one of the six ward-councillor seats, ahead of the October 26 vote. Expect the candidate list to fill out quickly over the next three weeks.
